Equine Assisted Psychotherapist
Emanuel trained in addictions treatment with Hazelden in Ireland and after graduating worked with the Sao Fiel Treatment Centre in Portugal before joining the Atitude Addictions Consultancy team as their representative on the Algarve. He later moved to Lisbon to work with Atitude as a therapist at their facility in Cascais where he also worked as their Equine therapist. He subsequently returned to the Algarve to take up a position as Treatment team leader at a local Portuguese facility.
In addition to his excellent qualification in addictions treatment Emanuel also trained in the UK in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy which remains a key professional interest and passion. He maintains his interest as well as his skill by frequent professional development in all aspects of Equine therapy which he passes on to our patients. Emanuel insightfully processes equine sessions with the Nova Vida patients and passes on to the Clinical Team his assessment of the session thus enabling the process to continue.
Emanuel has been closely associated with Nova Vida since its inception and on his return to the Algarve he quickly resurrected the Equine Assisted Psychotherapy as part of Nova Vida’s programme. Emmanuel conducts this weekly therapy along with Katherine, the horse expert and is keen to develop the equine programme with Nova Vida including individual and Family Sessions. In addition to his role as an addictions therapist Emanuel maintains a strong interest in experiential therapy.
Emanuel has further developed Nova Vida’s Equine Assisted Psychotherapy programme for 2016 providing a more joined-together approach between Equine and the core programme. By having a greater presence at Nova Vida Emanuel will be able to better help patients process what they have discovered at Equine and integrate it into their recovery process. As a fully qualified and professionally trained addictions therapist Emanuel will also have a bigger role in the programme delivery.
Emanuel also brings a fluency in the Portuguese and French languages and whilst English will always remain the lingua franca at Nova Vida those patients whose mother tongue is not English may at times benefit from Emanuel’s language abilities.
